THE TWELFTH INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY CONFERENCE
June 17–19, 2025
Winnipeg, MB
Manitoba Wildfires Update - June 11, 2025
Dear Conference Participants,
We want to begin by acknowledging the severity of the ongoing wildfire situation and extend our thoughts to all those impacted. We continue to make decisions about The Hockey Conference with wildfire evacuees at the forefront of our considerations. We recognize the critical importance of ensuring evacuees have access to safe shelter and support during this time.
After careful consideration of the current circumstances, we have made the decision to proceed as planned with our upcoming conference at the Fort Garry Hotel. Thank you for trusting that this decision was guided by strong ethical principles and after weighing all factors. As people who live and work in Manitoba, we have the evacuees and the safety of attendees at the top of our minds.
We have been in constant communication with the hotel about the impact of our conference on the hotel’s capacity to take in evacuees. We have confirmed with the hotel, as of this morning, that the rooms in our block – primarily single occupancy, one-king-bed accommodations – are not well-suited for the needs of most evacuees, many of whom require space for families or longer-term stays. In fact, we were told that a similar event was cancelled last week in the hope of freeing rooms for evacuees, but no evacuees were placed in those rooms, and they remained empty. At issue is that our rooms are booked before and after our conference, meaning that vacating our rooms for three days is not helpful. We have been advised that the Fort Garry Hotel still has vacancy during our conference for evacuee reservations, should they be asked to do so by the Red Cross.
At this time, the government has not mandated the cancellation of events, and the current conditions do not meet the criteria for invoking a force majeure clause in our contract. Cancelling the conference unilaterally would result in a substantial financial penalty; the hotel would still require payment for all meeting rooms, catering, and tech services. We would incur this penalty with no tangible benefit to those affected by the fires, as our vacated rooms would simply be made available to the general public without assurance they would be used by evacuees.
Finally, while we anticipate a good turnout at this conference, many of our speakers and attendees are local to Winnipeg and have not reserved a room at the Fort Garry Hotel, thus minimizing the number of hotel rooms we have booked as a group. It remains safe to travel to Winnipeg, and we continue to monitor the need for hotel rooms in wildfire efforts.
In support of those affected by the wildfires, we will be holding a fundraiser raffle during the conference, with 100% of proceeds going to the Canadian Red Cross to support wildfire relief efforts. We are currently accepting donations of items or services to include in this raffle, and we invite attendees and community members to contribute. This is one way we can come together to provide meaningful assistance where it's most needed.
If you have an item or service to donate, please contact Martine Dennie at martine.dennie@umanitoba.ca.
We remain in close communication with the Fort Garry Hotel and will continue to monitor the situation closely. If circumstances change – either through a government directive or at the request of the hotel due to a clear and immediate need for our rooms – we are prepared to adapt accordingly and proceed with the conference with assurances that our conference will not impede any wildfire efforts.
Manitoba Wildfires Update - June 9, 2025
Dear Hockey Conference Participants,
As you may already be aware, the Province of Manitoba has declared a state of emergency due to the numerous wildfires raging through the province. We have understandably had a few emails about these wildfires and concerns surrounding the status of the conference. We do not want to be insensitive to the gravity of the situation and the need for hotel rooms for evacuees in the city of Winnipeg. We have discussed the situation with the venue, the Fort Garry Hotel, and they have assured us that our conference is not impacting their ability to take in evacuees. At this time, the hotel has not been contacted to accommodate evacuees, for several reasons:
Most rooms are single occupancy, and therefore not suitable for families;
There are no amenities for children;
There is no continental breakfast;
Their regular room rate is higher than most service hotels; and
The Canadian Red Cross typically avoids Downtown properties.
That said, the hotel still has vacancies during our conference dates, and they remain able to take in evacuees if needed.
We will continue to monitor guidelines from the provincial government around the state of emergency. We are not able to cancel the conference as we would remain personally liable for all costs plus cancellation penalties, which would exceed our financial capacity. While the contracts have a force majeure clause, it cannot be invoked unless the province mandates that conferences be cancelled to accommodate evacuees. The conference is thus moving forward as planned.
As we monitor the situation, we are considering other ways that we can support the evacuees affected by the wildfires. In the meantime, we invite you to consider donating to the Canadian Red Cross (all donations are currently matched by the Government of Canada and the Government of Manitoba).
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We will continue to share any new updates on our website: www.thehockeyconference2025.ca.

What is the Hockey Conference?
Hockey continues to experience reckonings. While some incidents have garnered more media attention than others, questions about hockey’s deeper purpose abound: How might we, individually and collectively, reckon with a history of hockey that has contributed to acts of misogyny, violence, racism, homophobia, classism, and ableism? How might we reckon with realizing our entanglements and vulnerabilities in the context of hockey culture? In what ways are we implicated in narratives of hockey culture? People have begun to trouble the inheritances of hockey culture, and to recognize that the way the game has been understood and performed is not inevitable. We have witnessed these challenges through academic scholarship, through investigative journalism, through the activism of players, through the practical changes made by coaches, and through the policy changes enacted by leaders. Through this conference, we aspire to open up conversations and to cultivate conceptions of ice hockey that do not yet exist.
Although there is a conference theme, submissions that engage a range of themes are welcome for the conference. We are using the conference theme to organize the keynotes. We will also be using the conference theme for a journal special issue following the conferences. The theme is not intended to limit the topics people can speak about in their own presentations.
